Best Steak for Steak Tacos
When it comes to choosing the best steak for steak tacos, I always prefer skirt steak because it is a lean cut of meat that cooks quickly and can easily be sliced into strips for tacos. Skirt steak is also popular for its rich flavor and tenderness when cooked correctly. It has a nice balance of marbling, which adds to the juiciness and texture of the meat.
If you can’t get your hands on skirt steak you can opt for flank steak, or sirloin steak that are also great to make steak tacos. It’s important to choose a cut of meat that is not too fatty, as excessive fat can make the tacos greasy and heavy.
Steak Tacos Ingredients:
To make these easy steak tacos, you will need the following ingredients:
Skirt Steak – The star of the show, this cut of beef is known for its tender, juicy, and flavorful meat that is perfect for grilling or pan-searing.
Tortillas – The crispy and crunchy base that holds all the goodness together. The perfect vessel to deliver each delicious bite of your taco.
Pico de Gallo – A zesty and fresh topping made of diced tomatoes, onions, jalapenos, and cilantro, which adds a refreshing kick to your steak taco.
Avocado Lime Sauce – A creamy and tangy sauce made with avocados, lime juice, sour cream, and spices. It complements the flavors of the steak and Pico de gallo.
Jalapenos – Sliced jalapenos can be added for some heat if desired.
Cilantro – Fresh cilantro is a staple herb in Mexican cuisine and adds a bright and herbaceous flavor to the tacos.
Lime Wedges – Squeezing fresh lime juice over the tacos before serving adds a final burst of flavor.
How to make Easy Steak Tacos
To begin, let’s start with the star of the Taco Tuesday, the skirt steak.
In a medium bowl, combine ½ cup of lime juice with the skirt steak, and sprinkle on ½ teaspoon of oregano and cumin, ¼ teaspoon of chili flakes, 2 teaspoons of chili powder, and salt and pepper to taste.
Toss in a bunch of cilantro and add the juice of 2 limes and a generous drizzle of soy sauce. Cover and let the steak marinate for at least an hour or overnight in the fridge to allow the flavors to penetrate deep inside the meat.
Once the steak has marinated, heat a grilling pan over high heat and add ¼ cup of avocado oil. Cook the steak for 3 to 4 minutes on each side, depending on the thickness of your steak.
Once the steak is nicely browned and cooked through, remove from the heat and let it rest for a few minutes. Then, cut the steak into bite-sized chunks.
Now, it’s time to make Avocado Lime Sauce.
In a blender, add jalapenos, garlic cloves, lime juice, sour cream, avocado, parsley, and salt and pepper to taste.
Blend with a hand blender until all the ingredients are mixed and the sauce becomes smooth and creamy.
If you prefer a thinner consistency, add water to achieve the desired thickness.
Lastly, let’s not forget about Pico de gallo.
Chop 2 tomatoes, ½ red onion, and one seeded jalapeño into small chunks. Add the chopped ingredients to a bowl and stir in a bunch of cilantro.
Squeeze the juice of two limes and season with salt and pepper to taste. Give it a taste and adjust seasonings according to your liking.
Now that all of the components are ready, it’s time to assemble your tacos.
Warm up your tortillas, and add the chunks of steak, a dollop of avocado lime sauce, and a spoonful of Pico de gallo.
Fold the tortilla in half and enjoy the explosion of flavors and textures in every bite.
